What is CMYK?
CMYK is a subtractive color model used in color printing. It stands for Cyan, Magenta, Yellow, and Key (Black). Unlike RGB which emits light (additive), CMYK relies on the light from a page reflecting through the ink (subtractive). When you mix all CMY colors, you get a muddy brown; adding Key (Black) ensures true blacks and gives depth to images.
Why convert RGB to CMYK?
If you are designing materials that will be printed (like business cards, posters, or packaging) you generally need to provide colors in the CMYK space to the printer. Converting your web (RGB) colors gives you an approximation of how they will look when printed. Beware that some vibrant RGB colors simply cannot be reproduced in CMYK inks!
