What is a Weighted Grade Average?
A weighted grade average is a method of calculating a final course grade that gives different assignments different levels of importance. Rather than treating every assignment equally, a weighted system assigns a percentage weight to each category of work β for example, homework 20%, quizzes 30%, and final exam 50%. This reflects the reality that not all academic work contributes equally to demonstrating mastery of a subject.
The weighted average formula multiplies each assignment's score by its weight, sums those products, and divides by the total weight. For example, if a student scores 90% on homework worth 20% and 80% on the final exam worth 80%, the weighted average is (90 Γ 0.20) + (80 Γ 0.80) = 82%, not the simple average of 85%.
Understanding how weighted grades work empowers students to make strategic decisions about where to focus their effort. Knowing that the final exam carries 40% of the grade helps a student prioritize exam preparation over lower-weight assignments near the end of a semester.
How to Use This Tool
The Weighted Grade tab calculates your current course grade:
- Enter the assignment name (e.g., "Midterm Exam").
- Enter the raw score you received.
- Enter the maximum possible points for that assignment.
- Enter the weight of that assignment (e.g., enter 30 for a 30% weight).
- Click "+ Add Assignment" to add more assignments or grade categories.
- Click "Calculate Grade" to see your weighted average percentage and letter grade.
The Final Exam Calculator tab answers "what do I need on my final?":
- Enter your current grade percentage before the final exam.
- Enter the weight of the final exam as a percentage of the total grade.
- Enter the desired final grade percentage you want to achieve.
- Click "Calculate" to see the score you need on the final to reach your goal.

FAQ
How is a letter grade determined from a percentage?
The standard U.S. letter grade scale is: A (90β100%), B (80β89%), C (70β79%), D (60β69%), and F (below 60%). However, individual instructors and institutions may use different cutoffs. Some use a plus/minus system where 93β100 is A, 90β92 is A-, 87β89 is B+, and so on. Always check your course syllabus for the specific grading scale.
What happens if my weights do not add up to 100%?
When weights do not sum to 100%, the calculator normalizes them by dividing each weight by the total sum. For example, if your weights total 90, each weight is divided by 90 to produce relative proportions. For best accuracy, ensure your assignment weights sum to exactly 100%, matching your syllabus.
Is it possible to get a higher score than 100% on the final exam needed?
Yes. If your current grade is too low relative to your desired final grade and the final exam weight is limited, the required score may exceed 100%. This means it is mathematically impossible to reach your desired grade through the final exam alone. In such cases, speaking with your instructor about extra credit or other options may be your best path forward.
How do extra credit assignments affect the grade?
Extra credit typically adds bonus points beyond the maximum, which can raise your percentage above 100% on an individual assignment. When entering extra credit work in the calculator, enter the total points earned (including extra credit) as the score, keeping the maximum at the standard value. This will show you a percentage above 100% for that item, which boosts your weighted average accordingly.
